Penwortham primary school wants to expand with a new nursery building

Leaders at a Penwortham primary school want permisison for a new nursery building on the site.

St Mary Magdalen’s Primary School say there is an “on-going need” for a nursery service at the Buller Avenue facility that would “predominantly serve current families and their younger siblings.” School leaders have already been given permission from the Archbishop for the construction, but they now now need formal planning permission from South Ribble Borough Council.

What is planned?

The proposal is for a modular nursery building to the west of the school on land currently being used as a secondary car park for the adjacent St Mary Magdalen’s Church. It would be provide 78sqm of nursery space which would support up to 15 children.

It would be built from interlocking modular panels in the form of pressure treated timber and would consist of three toilets, one store room, a kitchen and a classroom space. The roof would be made from insulated metal and at the front of the building there would be a canopied playground area that will be fenced around to keep the children contained within the nursery area.

What about parking?

As a result of the modular building being erected to the rear elevation of the church, six car parking spaces would be lost from the overflow car park for use on Sundays.

A planning statement says: “Adequate car parking space will remain to the front elevation of the Church however if required, we propose that the Church utilise car parking spaces from the school playground on Sundays.”
